Greeting from Pia Kollmar

Highly esteemed Notable of the BierConvent International,

The beer industry in Europe is facing hard times. Whereby: It has already been in the middle of it for several months – and it is not getting better, on the contrary.

The tense phase of Corona and the associated lockdowns have brought the restaurant industry to its knees. And brewers are still struggling to make up for their lost sales one by one. And now this! Price increases at every turn, be it for malt, glass, wooden pallets, crown corks, labels, glue, DPG dye or diesel – and of course for the biggest cost chunk for most breweries: natural gas.

It is difficult not to lose courage and faith in one of the best beverages in the world, beer, in the face of the horror stories that keep chasing each other for the brewing industry in Europe and especially in Germany as a beer nation. Beer, however, connects people and so in this newsletter we also try to do the balancing act between crisis and joy.

We are happy about the portrait of our fourth newsletter sponsor Sabine Weyermann and the presentation of her very private book “The Malt Queen”. We are happy about the enlightening words of our long-time BCI member Hans Bauer in the interview “about beer”. And we are happy about the successful friendship meeting in Vienna in May this year and about our happy reunion in Ludwigsburg recently.

But first, let’s take a personally colored look at the beer market in Germany and around the world.
